Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

CLIMATE EQUITY

The Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation (CCCIA) recognizes that underserved groups, such as communities of color, low-income communities, indigenous peoples and tribal nations, and immigrant communities are disproportionately affected by adverse climate impacts. CCCIA is committed to working with partners and stakeholders to integrate social justice into our climate adaptation research and strategies.

CCCIA works internally to ensure our Center addresses UC San Diego's three tenants of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion:

ACCESS & SUCCESS

CCCIA is committed to attracting, retaining, and supporting a diverse faculty, staff, and student body within the Center and institution as a whole. The Center continues to hold workshops and trainings, as well as support internships and fellowships, that focus on the inclusion and elevation of underrepresented community members.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We seek to create and foster a positive and welcoming climate where everyone is valued, included, and supported. The Center is collaborating with Scripps’ Diversity Office and other UC San Diego departments on an ACCESS Justice initiative which seeks to elevate the visibility of underrepresented minority leaders at the intersection of climate science and social justice efforts.

The diversity of personal experiences, values, and world views that arise from differences of culture and circumstance among students, faculty, and staff at Scripps Institution of Oceanography strengthens our institution and our mission.



The best practices summarized in this report are compiled from the unit/divisional reports and presentations submitted for the annual EDI accountability meetings held in Fall 2019, in addition to several existing university-wide strategies and those championed by the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.



The UC San Diego community engaged in a collaborative and inclusive effort to shape the future of our campus through the UC San Diego Strategic Plan, which provides a framework for sustainable excellence, defines our shared aspirations, and identifies five goals to unify our campus.
