Puerto Rico Coastal Heritage and Sea-Level Rise Project

The Challenge

This project is a collaborative effort to restore damaged sand dunes. These dunes build resilience and buy time for CCCIA affiliated archaeologist Dr. Isabel Rivera-Collazo to preserve and document Puerto Rico cultural sites and practices.  The project is being led by the Climate Science Alliance (CSA) in partnership with CCCIA, Para la Naturaleza (PLN), Vida Marina, and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Our Approach & Partners

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico causing considerable impacts to its dune systems. These dunes are critical for protecting coastal habitats and communities against future storm surge and rising seas.
